Starting an online business can feel exciting… and also completely overwhelming. There’s so much advice out there, and half of it contradicts the other half. It’s no wonder most people don’t take that first step.
But it doesn’t have to be confusing. After selling over 60,000 digital products and running a successful online planner shop, I’ve learned exactly what steps you actually need to focus on first. And I want to help you skip the guesswork.
So if you’ve been dreaming about starting your own online business, but you’re stuck wondering what to do first—this is for you.
Below, I’m sharing a beginner-friendly online business checklist to help you get clarity and take action (without burning yourself out). You don’t need to have a business degree or marketing background. Just follow these steps one at a time.
1. Choose Your Niche
What do you love talking about, teaching, or helping people with? Pick something you’re passionate about or have personal experience with—that makes content creation and product development so much easier.
Think about what people already ask you for help with, or what you find yourself researching just for fun. Your niche doesn’t have to be unique, it just has to be something you enjoy and can stick with.
Pro tip: You don’t have to be an expert, just a step ahead of the person you’re helping. People love learning from someone relatable.
2. Decide What to Sell
This is where the fun begins. Think about what kind of digital product or offer you want to create. This will depend on what your audience needs and what feels exciting for you to build.
Popular beginner-friendly options include:
- Printable planners or journals
- Canva templates
- Workbooks or guides
- Online courses or challenges
- Digital downloads (eBooks, checklists, etc.)
Start small and build from there. Your first product doesn’t need to be massive—it just needs to help someone with one specific thing.
3. Set Up Your Website or Shop
You don’t need to spend months building a website. Start simple! The goal is to get your product online and available for purchase. You can always improve your site later.
The easiest way to get started? Create a blog using Bluehost — and if you need help setting it up, follow my step-by-step guide on how to start a profitable blog (it’s what I use and recommend), then connect your products using SendOwl for seamless digital delivery. If you’re not interested in blogging, you can also start with platforms like:
- Shopify (great for physical or digital products)
- Etsy (for digital planners, printables, or niche products)
- Podia (for courses, services, or bundles)
Just pick one and go from there. You don’t need to have it all figured out right now.
If you want an all-in-one solution that includes funnels, email marketing, landing pages, blogs, and even courses — I personally love ClickFunnels! It’s perfect for streamlining everything in one place, especially as your business grows.
4. Create Your Product
Use free or low-cost tools like Canva to design your product. Don’t overthink it. Focus on solving a small problem or creating something useful that your audience actually needs.
For example, if you want to help moms stay organized, you could create a printable daily planner. If you’re great at creating structure or schedules, a content calendar or productivity tracker could be perfect.
And if designing printables isn’t your thing? Don’t worry — there are so many other digital product options:
- Turn your knowledge into a mini course
- Write a short eBook or guide
- Create email templates or social media graphics
- Build a Notion workspace or Google Sheets tool
Start with what you already know or enjoy. The format can evolve over time, but the value you’re offering is what really matters.
5. Write Simple Sales Copy
Your sales page doesn’t need to be fancy. Focus on being clear, not clever. Speak directly to the person who needs your product.
Include:
- Who it’s for
- What problem it solves
- How it helps
- What they’ll get
Use short sentences, bullet points, and language your audience would actually use. Keep it clear and to the point. One or two short paragraphs + a list of benefits is a great start.
6. Set Up a Way to Collect Payments
This is where you get paid — and the good news is, most platforms make it super easy. Whether you’re using Shopify, SendOwl, or selling from your blog, you’ll usually just connect your PayPal or Stripe account to start accepting payments.
If you’re selling from a blog, you’ll need to use a tool like SendOwl, ThriveCart, Shopify, or Clickfunnels to securely deliver products and process payments. These tools act as a bridge between your blog and your payment processor.
Make sure to test the checkout process before you launch so everything runs smoothly for your customers.
7. Create a Simple Marketing Plan
Once your product is live, your next step is getting eyes on it. You don’t need to be everywhere. Just pick one platform and stay consistent.
Marketing ideas:
- Pin your product pages on Pinterest
- Write helpful blog posts and link to your products
- Create a freebie to build your email list
- Share behind-the-scenes or tips on Instagram
Start small. Even just one well-placed pin or blog post can start driving traffic.
8. Track What’s Working and Adjust
Once you launch, don’t just set it and forget it. This is where real growth starts. Use the analytics provided by your platform to see what’s getting views, clicks, and sales. What’s resonating with your audience? What isn’t?
Look for patterns: Are people visiting your site but not buying? Maybe your product or sales copy needs tweaking. Are your pins getting saves but no clicks? Try different titles or graphics.
Small tweaks can make a huge difference over time. The key is to treat your business like an experiment. Test, learn, improve, repeat. That’s how you grow without burning out. Look at your shop stats, check what’s getting clicks, and make small tweaks. Your first product doesn’t have to be perfect—it just needs to be out there.
Want to See How It’s Actually Done?
If you’re still feeling unsure or just want someone to walk you through it all, I created a completely free 7-day online business course — something I’ve been asked to do for years. I’ve spent the last several years actually building my own planner shop (not just talking about it), and after selling over 60,000 digital products, I finally said yes to teaching what’s worked for me.
This course is my way of pulling back the curtain and showing you what’s worked for me — without fluff or filler.
I don’t hold back the info you actually need to get started. While I will offer more advanced training later, this free course is all about helping you get set up in the right direction so you can start making sales as soon as possible.
Here’s what you’ll learn inside:
-
How to pick a profitable niche
-
How to create a product people actually want
-
How to set up your shop (the simple way)
-
How to start getting traffic that leads to sales
I’m not just throwing random advice at you. I’m showing you what’s worked for me — and how you can do it too.
So what’s in it for me? Well, I hope you like my teaching style enough to buy something from me down the road 😉 — and I do use affiliate links for tools I’ve personally used for years (like Canva, Bluehost, and Shopify). But even if you don’t, I want to make sure you’re set up for success before you move on to anything more advanced.
